Sciatica in Northwest Calgary: Physio and Chiropractic That Work Together

Sciatica is a pattern, not a diagnosis. We sort nerve irritation, disc related pain, and hip tightness so your plan in northwest Calgary is specific, not generic stretching.

Physiotherapist assessing lower back and hip pain related to sciatica in Calgary

Search “sciatica physiotherapy Calgary” and you will see a lot of generic advice: rest, heat, and a piriformis stretch. Some of that helps. A lot of it misses the actual driver of your symptoms. At Medpro Physio we treat sciatica as a pattern to investigate, not a label to stretch forever.

Our Nolanridge NW clinic is built for this kind of problem. You can start with physiotherapy, add chiropractic for joint mobility, and use massage or acupuncture when muscle guarding is keeping the nerve irritated.

Is it really sciatica?

True sciatic nerve irritation often includes sharp or electric pain, pins and needles, or a strip of symptoms below the knee. Pure buttock tightness that never goes past the thigh is often hip or lumbar joint referred pain. Both deserve treatment. They do not deserve the same YouTube routine.

  • Pain that travels past the knee, especially with sitting or coughing
  • Worse in the morning or after a long drive on Stoney Trail or Crowchild
  • Better with short walks, worse with slouched sitting
  • One sided calf tightness or a “dead” feeling in the foot
  • Back stiffness that started after lifting, shovelling, or a sudden twist

How we assess sciatica at Medpro Physio

We watch how you bend, squat, and sit. Nerve tension tests, hip range, and lumbar movement tell us whether to unload a disc, free a stiff facet joint, or retrain hip control. You get a clear explanation in plain language before hands on care starts.

If your symptoms change with neck or mid back movement as well, we check the whole chain, not only the spot that hurts.

Physiotherapy and chiropractic under one roof

Physiotherapy for sciatica usually mixes joint mobilisation, nerve glides when they are appropriate, and loading exercises that make the back more tolerant of sitting and lifting. Chiropractic care can help when spinal joints are locked and feeding muscle spasm. We do not bounce you between two clinics across the city. Your practitioners can coordinate the same week at 367 Nolanridge Crescent NW.

Most people do not need surgery. Red flags such as rapidly worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or unexplained fever need medical assessment first. For typical sciatica, a structured two to six week plan is the usual starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rest in bed if I have sciatica?

Short rest during a flare is fine. Staying in bed for days usually slows recovery. We help you find positions and walking doses that settle the nerve without shutting down completely.

Is chiropractic safe for sciatica in Calgary?

When assessment rules out serious pathology, gentle joint treatment can reduce guarding. We match the technique to your irritability rather than using a one size fits all adjustment.

Will MRI change my treatment?

Not always. Disc findings are common on scans even in people without pain. We treat how you move and what you feel. Imaging is useful when symptoms are severe, progressive, or atypical.
